Prep Roundup: 12/5

Thanks in large part to the performances of five Fort Walton Beach cross country athletes, Region 1 made a clean sweep at the FACA All-Star race on Saturday, winning both heats on the strength of the heavy Viking presence.

Holly Stanton finished fourth individually and teammate Iolani Scanlan placed seventh to lead the charge for the girls while Matt Bevil placed sixth on the boys’ side to lead Region I to a team win. Chris Douglas and Luc Lawrence also competed in the race.

“It was really cool to be on the winning region,” Bevil said. “Just making it there and taking three guys from our team was a real confidence booster.”

The race consisted of four teams representing each of the four regions in the state of Florida. Only the top eight seniors from all classifications received invitations to compete for their respective region.

“It was neat to have two girls from the same team,” Stanton said of running alongside her Viking teammate.

Both Stanton and Scanlan started out “dead-last” according to Stanton before finishing inside the top 10.

“It was a lot different,” Scanlan said. “It went really well.”
