FORT WALTON BEACH – A dream realized, you could just see the weight of the world melt off of John Marvin’s shoulders.

The FWB safety was finally putting pen to ink. He was officially a Yellow Jacket.

Surrounded by family, classmates, friends and coaches in the FWB High School media room, the 6-foot-1, 190-pound senior welcomed National Signing Day by etching his future with Georgia Tech.

“I’m very humble right now,” said Marvin, dressed in a slick Georgia Tech windbreaker and hat. “I’m just glad the day finally came. I just never dreamed of this. Well I dreamed of it but I never thought it would come a reality. I’m just blessed.”

Blessed with open-field tackling and blanket coverage skills that drew the attention of a team that last year competed in the ACC title game. And it’s just those big-spotlight games that endeared the Yellow Jackets to Marvin.

“In the ACC I’m able to be a part of a team that qualifies for BCS Championship games, and those are pretty big games,” he said. “I just hope we can get there and I’m going to do my best to contribute right out of the gates.”

Marvin enters Atlanta after an impressive swan song for the Vikings, who finished 7-3 and barely missed out on a playoff appearance after being on the wrong side of a District 2-6A tiebreaker with fellow 3-2 Niceville.

The leader – both physically and mentally – of the Vikings’ secondary, Marvin tied for the team lead with seven pass deflections, was third in total tackles (67), was second in total tackles (44) and even returned a kickoff for a score.

“He’s just a great player,” FWB coach Mike Owens said. “Great character, hard worker and a tremendous athlete.”

And that package is what the Yellow Jackets saw firsthand during their 2012 summer camp.

“The thing about John is once you meet him and find out the person he is, you just fall in the love with him and that’s how it all fell into place for him at Georgia Tech,” Owens said. “He went to camp, they offered and he fell in love with Georgia Tech.”

Also there to etch his future on the gridiron was FWB outside linebacker Rashad Wilson, who signed with Coffeyville Community College in Kansas.

The 6-2, 220-pound senior was fourth among the Vikings in total tackles (54) and third in solo tackles (41), forced two fumbles, hauled in two interceptions and had two pass deflections.

“Rashad is a tremendous player, has that 6-2, 220-pound frame and runs well,” Owens said. “He just has to be committed to academics and this gives him an opportunity to do that. If he does that, he’ll have an opportunity to go to a four-year program and get a degree.”
