FREEPORT - After a close first half, the Cottondale Hornets poured it on in the second half to pummel the Freeport Bulldogs 52-26 in a season opener Friday night.

With the Bulldogs on top 13-12 going into the half, Cottondale came out strong in the second half to put 40 points on the board.

The Hornets, which rolled up 399 yards on the ground, had three players to rush for more than 100 yards each. JaVontai Hall picked up 125 yards and a touchdown, while DeMichael Faulk rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns. Tim Lock rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Freeport had 189 yards on the ground and 244 through the air with Dillon Bates completing 17 of 30 passes.

But the difference in the game for the Bulldogs was turnovers.

"We turned the ball over and you can't turn the ball over and win," said Freeport Coach Jim Anderson as he walked off the field.

"We had four or five turnovers and we've got to be more physical up front. But Cottondale did a really good job. They were very physical. We had our chances. We just didn't make the most of them. We've got to come back Monday and go to work.

"There are little things we did poorly tonight and we can look and say that had a big impact on the game tonight," Anderson said. "It all adds up. It's a bitter taste in your mouth, but you want to come back and get better."

Cottondale Coach Mike Melvin says conditioning was a big factor with players cramping up throughout the night.

In addition to the humidity draining the players, Melvin said "We've got to execute better. We shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times."

Both teams struggled in the first quarter for a no score.

Freeport finally broke onto the board in the second on a hook and ladder play with Chase Caswell taking it in for the score. Casewell finished the evening with 52 yards and a touchdown.

Cottondale answered with a 2-yard run up the middle by Norris Calhoun for a tie game.

Freeport bobbled a snap and Cottondale took over and scored four plays later on a quarterback sneak.

Right before the half, Freeport put together a 13-play drive capped off by a 7-yard pass from Dillon Bates to Kyle Collinsworth. Caswell kicked in the point after and Freeport led.

Cottondale came out and scored on its opening drive with Hall scoring on a 6-yard run.

The Hornets scored one more time in the third on a 5-yard run by Lock. Hall ran in the 2-point conversion and Cottondale went up 28-13.

Freeport answered at the start of the fourth on a 35-yard pass play from Bates to Collinsworth for the TD.

However, it didn't take Cottondale long to retaliate. They scored in three plays with Faulk taking it in from 22-yards out.

Freeport scored one last time on a quarterback keeper with less than 3 minutes to go.

Cottondale hit paydirt twice more. Faulk scored on an 8-yard run and then Lock intercepted a Bates pass and returned it 55 yards for the score.
