Area football stars abundant on AP All-State list

The best season in the history of Navarre High School football keeps producing results.

On Friday, the Associated Press released its All-State teams in the state of Florida, and the Raiders, who reached the Class 6A semifinals, led all area 6a schools with three selections spread out over the First, Second and Third teams.

Among smaller schools, state quarterfinalist Freeport was well-represented, placing four players on the Class 1A list.

On the AP’s First Team All-State list, Crestview’s Denzel Ware serves as the area’s only representative. A 6-foot-3, 215-pound defensive end that’s already committed to Florida State, Ware receives the recognition following his junior campaign.

Four area players received Second Team All-State nominations, including Daily News Player of the Year Jay Warren, who rushed for more than 1,800 yards and 18 touchdowns in helping lead Navarre to the 6A semifinals. Warren is joined on the Second Team by teammate Nick Benton, whose five interceptions led the area and landed him a spot on the Daily News All Area team.

Niceville offensive lineman Nicholas Haynes and Choctaw punter Zach Theriault were also named Second-Team All-State performers.

On the third team, Clemson commitment Jordan Leggett received recognition after his standout season at Navarre. The 6-foot-6, 225 pounder was also an all-state performer in 2011. Niceville kicker Andrew Mitchell and Choctaw defensive end Eric Brelia were also listed as Third Team All-State standouts.

Fort Walton Beach quarterback Blake James and Crestview tailback Micah Reed were each named Honorable Mention All-State performers.

Four Bulldogs honored

After a 6-6 season that saw Freeport take eventual Class 1A champ Northview to overtime in the playoffs, four Bulldogs were named to either the First Team or Second Team All-State lists for Class 1A.

Freeport quarterback Gabe Moore, who combined for 2,050 yards and 25 touchdowns in 2012, was the area’s lone First Team representative. Moore also received All-State recognition in 2011.

On the Second Team, Freeport placed WR Morgan Hardee, LB Nick Russell and DB Owen Cole. Cole was also the Daily News Small School Player of the Year.
