The Indians took advantage of a Niceville handball call in the box and Tyler Theirault knocked in a Mikey Lightbourne assist for what proved to be the game-winner to give the Indians the 1-0 win.
Choctaw, who started last season 1-6, is now out to a 6-0 record this season.
Choctaw coach Chris McDaniel was pleased with the team’s win over such a solid opponent in Niceville.
“Both teams are so even, it was just a battle,” McDaniel said. “We knew coming in it was going to be who got the lucky strike.
"They’re the real deal.”
McDaniel was especially pleased with his team’s defense, namely the backline, who persevered through losing starter J.J. Mills in the opening minutes to go on for the shutout.
“We battled, that’s about it,” Choctaw defender Andrew Morrell said of the win. “Through the first five minutes we lost our right back and Colton (Bayles) stepped up.”
The Indians’ defense didn’t skip a beat with Bayles in, and goalie Adam Cahill made 12 saves, including a beautiful diving save in the final minutes to help the Indians preserve the lead.
“He played good,” McDaniel said of Morrell. “That back line, they’re work horses.”
Choctaw’s J.V. team bested Niceville 3-0.
