Spock sets new county records at state
Even an hour-long delay during Thursday's Class 3A Swimming Finals couldn't slow down Niceville's Ross Spock.
Spock turned in an All-American and county record time of 46.28 in the 100 freestyle to finish fifth at the state swim meet and punctuate a season chocked full of record-breaking performances.
"I told myself before the race that I wanted to set the record," Spock said shortly afterward. "I set that as my goal.
"I had a really good swim. I was pretty satisfied with my race."
Niceville coach Kathy Ritacco called the junior's performance mind-blowing.
"It's a great honor to get an All-American time," Ritacco said. "And to set the county record doubles the sweetness."
Spock also finished ninth in the 100 backstroke, missing the finals with a time of 53.41, missing the finals by just two-tenths of a second.
Even in the afterglow of his latest achievement Spock was already looking forward.
"I can't wait for next year," Spock said. "I'll be a senior, I'll be bigger and stronger and faster. Hopefully, I'll get a top three."
