The Walton baseball team scored five runs in the first inning on its way to an 8-3 victory Monday over Freeport.

James Towery blasted a homer and also picked up the win, striking out four and allowing three hits. Towery went 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Angus Anderson added two hits, including a double, and scored twice while Steve Murphy added two hits and two RBIs.

Brennan Orcutt had a two-run single that highlighted Walton’s big first inning.

Walton (2-5) plays host Thursday to Marianna, while Freeport (0-2) plays Friday at Holmes County.

Baker 11, Ponce de Leon 1: The Gators scored a lot of runs in the District 1-2A game without needing a lot of hits.

Baker (4-4, 2-0) only had three of them but drew six walks and had three batters hit. The Gators scored six times in the second inning to break the game open.

Christian Mainor struck out eight in tossing the two-hitter. Dylan Kersey had two hits and an RBI, and Dakota Josey added a double and an RBI for Baker, which plays host Friday to Freeport.

South Walton 10, Cottondale 2: The Seahawks scored four runs apiece in the first and second innings and cruised to the District 2-2A victory.

Johnathan Duncan notched the win by striking out five in six innings. Justin Moore went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, and Alex Astin added a hit, two runs and two RBIs.

South Walton (7-2, 3-1) plays Thursday at Ponce de Leon.

Softball

Baker 14, Ponce de Leon 2: The Gators nearly batted around three times in the second inning when they scored all 14 of their runs.

Lauren Griffith went 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Mollie Royal was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Danielle Marelli was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Dani Mayhair chipped in two RBIs.

Macie Wilde won in the circle and also tripled and scored twice.

Baker (5-2, 2-0) plays Thursday at Northview.

Freeport 11, Ponce de Leon 5: Jesse Moulton and Taylor Mills had three hits apiece as the Bulldogs notched their first win of the season and in District 1-2A play.

Mills also scored three times while Dannica Mosher had two hits and two RBIs, and Kayla Eldridge had two hits.

Rani Simmons notched the win for Freeport (1-6, 1-2), which plays host next Tuesday to Ponce de Leon.

Weightlifting

Fort Walton Beach 59, Choctawhatchee 29: The Vikings claimed the victory, although both squads earned five first-place finishes.

Gaining top honors for Fort Walton Beach was Cody Sprouse (119-pound class, lifted 350 pounds), Seth Bowling (129, 400), Thomas Bowling (169, 565), Carl Blanco (219, 645) and Loy Williams (238, 620).

Choctaw gained first places from Michael Hawthorne (139, 465), Cedric Bridgewater (154, 490), Charlie Lott (183, 610), Paul Spikes (199, 615) and Darius Hanks (Heavyweight, 670).

 

Baker 59, Rocky Bayou Christian 29: The Gators claimed eight first places in the victory.

Winning for Baker were Jourdain Sanguyo (119-pound class, lifted 310 pounds), seventh-grader Tyler Oliver (129, 220), Ivory Smith (154, 345), David Frey (169, 425), Cory Harper (199, 530), Cameron Campbell (219, 375), Mason Doggette (238, 505) and Jett Feltner (Heavyweight, 475).

James Waldron won the 183 class with 545 pounds, edging Dakota Hooper by 5 pounds. Drew Kirkpatrick (139, 295) also won for the Knights.
