East, West clash in PSA All Star Football Game
Later tonight when the Pensacola Sports Association’s 8th Annual Subway High School All-Star Football Game presented by the Andrews Institute kicks off, it will mark the culmination of years of hard work for the 28 area seniors selected to this year’s game.
For Navarre’s Brad Leggett, it will serve as a reminder of just how far he has come.
“This is what I used to dream about as a freshman,” Leggett said. “I feel honored to be a part of this game.”
Kickoff for tonight’s game is set for 7 p.m. at Woodham Middle School. Admission is $7 and just $5 with the donation of a canned good.
The game pits an East team comprised of the top seniors in Okaloosa and Santa Rosa counties against a West team made up of seniors from Escambia County. And while the names and faces change, the bragging rights at stake do not.
Baker coach Matt Brunson, who will serve as the East head coach tonight, said this year’s game promises to be another physical battle between the two sides.
“We’re going to have our hands full facing the guys from Escambia County,” Brunson said, “but we wouldn’t trade these kids for anybody. It’s an honor to work with these guys.”
This year’s East team includes Baker’s Cory Harper, Dillon Cotton, Colton Bouchard and Ivory Smith; Choctawhatchee’s Luke Clark, Therion Robinson, Jesse Bates, Terrence Bryant and Max Keefe; Crestview’s Earl Reed, Matt Hutchison, Will Boler and Geo Hillsman;, Fort Walton Beach’s Kyle Van Atta, Yoshoub Timms and Dexter Hottel;, Navarre’s Leggett, Dusty Jones, Dwayne Carter, Michael Hill, Virgilio Hunter and Marquis Hagewood; Niceville’s Joey Collins, Sebastian Schutte, Trey Barns and Kevin Chasteen and Rocky Bayou Christian’s Josh Stubblefield and Caleb McCullough.
Niceville head coach John Hicks and Fort Walton Beach head coach Mike Owens are both on Brunson’s East staff.
As for the approach to tonight’s game, Brunson and the East staff have installed some packages and tinkered with lineups, but for the most part will let the players play.
“We’re not reinventing anything,” Brunson said. “We’re just trying to get these guys lined up and get our packages together. These guys have been coached up during the year, we’re going to get them to the ballgame, keep it simple and hopefully, they can make some plays.”
