Ronnie Couch scored on a feed from Daniel Hockaday in the 70th minute to push the Fort Walton Beach boys soccer team past Escambia 1-0 Monday night in the quarterfinals of the District 1-4A tournament.
“It was massive,” first-year Vikings coach Greg Devito said of the Couch goal. “It was a pivotal point in the game. (Couch) is just a tre-mendous player.
“He really came up big.”
Fort Walton Beach goal keeper Braeden Luna had seven saves for the Vikings (14-6-1), while Hayden Stiles was also cited for strong de-fensive play.
Fort Walton Beach will next face the winner of tonight’s quarterfinal between Crestview and Pace.
“Our development throughout the season has really paid off,” Devito said. “Hopefully we can take that and progress into the next match.”
Niceville 7, Pine Forest 0: Eddie Bird and Matt Worthen each scored a pair of goals as the Eagles did all their scoring in the second half.
David Williams, Andrew Knight and Parker White also had a goal apiece. Cody Friesen had two assists.
Niceville (24-2) will next play the winner of today’s District 1-4A quarterfinal between Navarre and Tate on Thursday.
South Walton 9, Walton 1: Andy Rodriguez and Lupe Gordillo each had three goals as the Seahawks mercy-ruled the host Braves in the District 1-2A tournament.
Michael Sweircz, Edgar Flores and Matt Dual had a goal apiece for the Seahawks. South Walton will play Pensacola Catholic on Wednes-day.
Girls basketball
South Walton 69, Freeport 22: The Seahawks hit 27-of-48 attempts from the field, raced out to a 21-0 lead and cruised past the Bulldogs in an impressive win.
Casey Perot led South Walton (17-7) with 11 points while Tayler Menard and Alyssa Bump each had nine points.
Freeport was led by Mary Kate Myrick’s game-high 19 points.
South Walton hosts Fort Walton Beach tonight.
