Fort Walton Beach's Yoshoub Timms

2011 Dandy Dozen: FWB's Yoshoub Timms

Daily News

FORT WALTON BEACH – Yoshoub Timms stands out.

At 6-1, and a lean 265 pounds, he doesn’t look like your average high school senior. There is nothing ordinary about him on the football field either. That’s why college football programs from around the country have taken notice of Fort Walton Beach’s hulking defensive end.

Timms, a 2011 Daily News’ Dandy Dozen selection, currently holds offers from the likes of Syracuse, Western Michigan, Southern Mississippi and Northern Illinois.

“Yoshoub is probably one of the most talented defensive linemen we’ve had here,” Fort Walton Beach coach Mike Owens said. “He’s got very good speed and quickness and he’s also powerful.”

Power is something that has always come natural to Timms, who started lifting weights in high school and bench pressed 225 pounds his first time on the bench.

“I think I’m more of a brute strength, powerful (player),” Timms said. “I got some speed, I’m pretty fast, but I’m more of a brute strength guy.”

It makes sense that he is a state qualifier in shot put and a member of the weight lifting team as well.

But this season will mark his third year as a starter after initially finding his way onto the field as a sophomore to replace former Viking standout Deiontrez Mount.

Mount, now a freshman at Louisville, manned the defensive front with Timms last season. Though Mount was one of the area’s top players and a friend to Timms, he looked somewhere else for guidance on how to play football.

“The person I looked up to was Oshkin Bulutoglu,” Timms said. “I looked up to him because when he played, he never stopped. He was always going, he had a motor, he never quit.”

Much of Timms’ summer was spent working on using his hands more, and getting in peak condition so that he too could have a motor that never faltered when called upon. The senior has set his sights high, and expects a lot out of himself in his last season as a Viking.

“I want to get two sacks a game, so I want to get at least 20 sacks this year,” he said.

“That seems pretty legit, I can get that.”
