Travis leads Pensacola past Choctaw
Choctawhatchee scored on some big plays, but there were just not enough of them in Pensacola, as the Indians fell to the Tigers, 27-22 in Friday night’s Region 1-6A quarterfinal.
The Indians (8-3) got on the board first with a 35 yard field goal by Skyler Feckner.
That lead was short lived, though, as Pensacola’s Damarius Travis rumbled 60 yards to make it 7-3. It was just the beginning of what proved to a big night for the Tiger quarterback, as he finished with 180 yards rushing.
Clark finished the night with nine completions on 27 attempts for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
Terrance Bryant answered Travis’ early run on the ensuing kickoff, returning the kick all the way to the Pensacola 5. Devin Borders caught a five-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Luke Clark to make it 9-7. But the rest of the night belonged to the Tigers.
Pensacola took the lead for good when they put together a 14-play drive, the only pass coming on its final snap when Travis hit Shaquille Bush for a 14 yard touchdown.
Bush and Travis would hook up once again as the Tigers extended its lead to 27-9 just before halftime.
The Indians would make some noise late in the second half when Phillip Sherman blocked a Pensacola punt and returned 45 yards for the score to make it to make it 27-16.
Bryant would work his magic one more time, this time with a punt return to the Tigers’ 28 with just over four minutes left in the game. Four plays later, Bryant would catch a Clark bullet from 17 yards out to make it 27-22.
Choctaw went for two, but Clark was stopped short of the goal line when he called his own number.
Travis helped seal the victory when he leaped high to corral Choctaw’s ensuing onside kick attempt and keep the Indians from getting another shot at the end zone.
Clark also led the Indians ground attack with 25 yards on three carries.
Travis did the most damage on the night by not only rushing for 180 yards but throwing for two touchdowns and 50 yards.
