Anderson looking toward tough season for Bulldogs

Jul 27, 2007 5:21 pm

Freeport head football coach Jim Anderson says people tell him all the time “he is one player away from winning it all.”

There is no better illustration of this observation than this year’s Bulldog lineup.

The Bulldogs are thin at most positions and Anderson is concerned about the lack of depth in the lineup.

With many players playing both sides of the ball, he is also concerned about keeping players.

Anderson knows it is tough to play offense and defense well.

“The last player at Freeport that came close to playing well on defense as well as being quarterback was Josh McKay,” said Anderson.

Senior Logan Caudill, who will spend time at quarterback, is also a key defensive player at linebacker.

Because of Caudill’s importance to the defense, Anderson will be splitting Caudill’s time on offense with sophomore Cole Weeks.

With 2007 being Caudill’s last season, Anderson is looking to groom Weeks for 2008 and 2009.

“I want him [Weeks] to get plenty of playing time and gain experience this year,” said Anderson.

The toughest job for Anderson and his staff will be keeping the Bulldogs up mentally for each game this year.

The Florida High School Athletic Association has completed its redistricting for the 2007 season and District 1-A will have Freeport matched up against seven district opponents.

With only 10 games in the regular season, almost every game is key to making a post-season appearance.

The Bulldogs’ 2007 schedule has them playing seven straight district games starting with Wewahitchka on Sept. 21 and ending with Sneads on Nov. 2.

However, Anderson believes the Bulldogs have an opportunity for postseason play. He has faith in this year’s group of players.

“They are a great group of hard working kids,” said Anderson.
